Pfff, lange zit. En dat het verhaal nogal wat tijd nodig heeft om los te komen, helpt ook niet mee.
Maar als we eenmaal een uurtje (van de 2,5) onderweg zijn , begint de film te leven. Men is klaar met het voorbereiden van de kijker , alle onderbouwende informatie is gespuid L nu kan men echt van start met het cinematografische deel: een biopic maken over een van de interessantste presidenten die de VS hebben gehad.
De grote pré van de film zit in de acteurskeuze: het wordt bijna vervelend, maar opnieuw zet Daniel-Day Lewis een top-acteerprestatie neer. Van de luisterende en informatie verzamelende man in het begin naar de ondernemende , gretig dromende en visionaire man zoals hij nu nog herinnerd wordt.
De hele film draait om het 13e amendement op de Amerikaanse grondwet. Dat is het voorstel waarin de slavernij moet worden afgeschaft. Exact in zijn presidentsdagen was dat het hete hangijzer, het land was gespleten door de burgeroorlog en de onoverbrugbare verschillen tussen North & South.
Daarmee is de film ook een soort rechtbankdrama geworden, met die uitzondering dat de allesbeslissende rechter dit keer een kamervoorzitter is.
Veel over te zeggen, veel te zien: een echte Spielberg dus. Benieuwd naar uw mening.
